Latest News and Match ReportsFrindsbury Strollers v Sherwood (August 16, 2009)
Frindsbury were looking to avenge their defeat from earlier in the season, and assembled a strong-looking side to take on the task. With Frindsbury enjoying its own mini heatwave and a good looking-track offering the prospect of plenty of runs, Rob Peters was disappointed to lose the toss and not in the least bit surprised to be invited to field first.
All of the top six Bowmen reached double figures, with skipper Tony Rossiter top scoring with 39. The bowlers struggled at first to take wickets, with openers Raj Bassi (8-1-31-0) and John Tadman (5-0-32-0) both unable to make the vital breakthrough. Terminator Tadman had consumed at least one cheeky pint before taking the field, and this may have caused the problems he had at first with the wind………….... in his face, making bowling difficult.
Ray Burt and Sunny Singh were then introduced to the attack, and this paid dividends straight away as Singh (5-0-22-2) removed both openers including colt Harry Palmer to a fine catch at square leg by Steve Bassett. Dangerman Mark Norris fell for a trap set by the Burt brothers, lofting one from Ray the Elder to Burt the Younger at square leg, and Harry Horsfall (5-0-20-1) accounted for Hobbes by tempting him to hole out to Steve Bassett who took another fine catch.
At the half-way stage a score of 220+ looked on the cards, but some tight bowling all round, particularly from George Burt (5-0-23-3, including a slip catch by Blackman) helped limit Sherwood to 189 all out.
Pete Blackman (43) looked to be in complete control as, supported by Raj Bassi (11) and Sunny Singh (18) the score moved along nicely to 79-1. David Peters struck three quick boundaries after both had departed, but after Blackman was caught by Tony Rossiter it wasn’t until Harry Horsfall - coming in at number 8 - that another batman made double figures. His innings of 17 amazingly included no sixes, and once he had gone, leaving Frindsbury faltering on 151-8, victory was beginning to appear unlikely. The two Tadmans added a useful 20 runs before The Terminator was terminated by Housedon, which left the skipper to join Dan Tadman at the crease to try to steer the team home to victory.
The last wicket pair got the score to within 10 of Sherwood’s before young Tadman lofted one to skipper Rossiter, who gratefully pouched the catch to give Sherwood another win.
Thanks to The Pickle Queen - aka Kath Tadman, and my Good Lady Wife – aka Yes Dear – for a splendid tea, and to Mark and Emily for running the Bar.
