St Lawrence v Frindsbury III's (July 25, 2009)

St Lawrence and Highland Court 3rd XI v Frindsbury 3rd XI

Nigel Blown led the convoy to Highland Court. Those of us who had been there before (i.e. me) imagined that this would be a straightforward journey along the M2 and A2 to the Bridge turnoff, then through the village of Bridge to the ground.  However SatNav had other ideas.  The wonders of modern technology actually determined that we should go into Canterbury, along the A28 towards Ashford, through a number of small villages, down a No Through Road, through more villages, then back into Canterbury, back on the A2 (briefly) and off it again at Bridge, through Bridge and straight past the entrance to the ground back towards the A2.

Eventually, after an hour and a quarter’s journey, we arrived and were delighted to find an excellent-looking track.  We were even more delighted to find that the Saints didn’t have an umpire (albeit one did arrive later) so we could choose to bat first on it.

Daves Gracey and Evans set about compiling their customary good start.  The Saints’ bowling was proving hard to get away, but the Daves put on 31 before Evans (16) was beaten by Phil Kelly. Gracey (15) followed soon afterwards, and a succession of wickets then tumbled as only Shahab Raza (24) managed to make double figures.  Harry Horsfall hit a huge straight six, Rob Peters slipped over - completely stranded - but somehow wasn’t run out first ball, but generally highlights were few and far between and Frindsbury were all out for a paltry 96.

Tea was taken, and the visitors set about devising a cunning plan to bowl out the opposition (who had lost only one game all season) for 95 or less.  The “Saints” must have thought the run chase was going to be easy………………..and they were right.  Sunny Singh put down a sharp(ish) chance off Pete Ashenden in the first over, but that probably didn’t affect the outcome of the match.  The bowlers worked hard, with Ray Burt (3-1-11-0) and Mohsin Raza (2-1-3-1) in particular causing the batsmen a few problems, but the result was never really in doubt and the home side knocked off the required runs in 18.4 overs.
